In the role of Clinical Supervisor

Piers Heaney
I am a long term user, advocate and practitioner of clinical supervision. In addition to the qualified supervisory role with Grief Practitioners, I have undertaken training in related but different models of supervision. I am also a certified trainer of clinical supervisors and have delivered training packages to numerous organistions throughout New Zealand to introduce and train their staff in this process.
I believe that engaging in clinical supervision affords safety to the client, and requires accountability from the practitioner. In addition to this, I also see the process as a valuable tool for professional development and dealing with complex matters such as boundary and ethical issues.
Supervision is about systematically reflecting on one's skills, interventions, and the dynamics of any transaction. It is about developing clinical wisdom and professional practice.

staying sane, confident and competent

Supervision fosters Super Vision - that is the ability to see beyond or through what is immediately apparent and to allow what is hidden or in the process of 'becoming' to fully emerge. It promotes a belief that it is important to have time and opportunity to think widely rather than to be focused on problem solving in a narrow restrictive way. The process is driven by the supervisee, and is not related to any line management or work supervisory function. It has nothing to do with performance appraisal.
Work has involved:
-
Supervising theological students while doing pastoral training, and liaising with their respective Boards.
-
Providing professional supervision for a diverse clientele that has included chaplains, teachers, private and public sector managers, self-employed professionals and health care workers.
-
Introducing the concept of clinical/professional supervision to numerous organisations, and then providing training for staff to be supervisors.
